Fall 2011 Classes

Registration is now open for the Monday Homeschool Classes Fall 2011 session! Here you will find registration information along with a schedule of classes. If you experience problems registering, or have any questions, please email committee@mhcct.org or call Laurel at (860) 836-0671. Also, if you see a gap in our schedule and have an idea for how to fill it, please let us know.

Fall 2011 – Registration Information

(Please read carefully, as several things are different this session!)

When: We will begin classes on Monday September 19, and end classes on Monday October 31, with no classes on October 10.  Share Day will take place on Monday, November 7.

Where: All of our classes are held in Manchester, CT. Our usual home, the Lutz Children’s Museum, will be undergoing major renovations during September and October, therefore we will be holding the bulk of our classes at Cheney Hall (home of the Little Theater of Manchester) this session. We will also continue to hold classes at the Oak Grove Nature Center, and will be meeting at the Charter Oak Park as well. These three locations are located within 1.5 miles of each other. We would like to thank the Lutz Museum for helping us find temporary digs, and especially thank the Little Theater of Manchester for their generosity in allowing us to use their beautiful and historic building free of charge (see below for special fall membership information).

There is no hang-out space for older children, or play space for younger children available at Cheney Hall, so it will not be possible for children to remain on-site unless they are in a class. Because of this, you are welcome to drop your child off with their teacher at Cheney Hall (or Oak Grove) and take your other children to one of the following locations to play:

1) Charter Oak Park (less than 1 mile from both Cheney Hall and Oak Grove) has a playground, a greenway for walking/bike riding/etc., large fields for playing soccer/softball/etc., as well as tennis and basketball courts.

2) Oak Grove Nature Center (1.5 miles from Cheney) has many hiking trails through the woods just waiting to be explored.

3) Mary Cheney Library (1 mile from Cheney Hall, 1.5 miles from Oak Grove) is the main branch of the Manchester Public Library and has a comfortable children’s section.

We consider these, as well as Cheney Hall itself, to be part of our ‘campus’ and expect to be able to find you at one of these locations. We will also ask you to ensure that your child’s teachers have a cell phone number where you can be reached. If you do not have other children to consider, we expect you to remain at the location where your child is, unless you have spoken with Laurel. We will also be asking parents remaining at Cheney Hall to assist in escorting children from one class to another, so that parents at other locations do not need to return until it’s time to pick up their children for lunch or when their last class is over.

Membership Requirements: It remains our policy that you must be a member of the Lutz Children’s museum to participate in classes.  For general information about the museum and the benefits of membership, go to www.lutzmuseum.org.  To see what membership does for our organization in particular, click on Our Partnership with the Lutz.

Important Fall Membership Information: The Little Theater of Manchester (LTM) has generously agreed to allow us to use Cheney Hall rent-free. However, in order for us to be covered under their insurance, and to compensate them for additional utilities and maintenance costs, they have requested that our families become members of LTM. Membership is $15 per family. In order to offset this cost, the Lutz has offered to give all of our families that join LTM a $15 credit toward their Lutz renewal. Read Membership Information – Fall 2011 for details. We would like to thank both the LTM and the Lutz Children’s Museum for their generous support of our group.

How: Both registration and payment are available online.  Please remember that it takes many hours to process registrations, and all of this work is done by one volunteer.  In order to reduce the amount of time she has to spend on paperwork and bookkeeping, please read all of the following before registering and follow these steps carefully:

  1. Clicking on the class links below will take you to detailed class descriptions.  You can add the class directly to your shopping cart from there.  Click on the “Fall 2011 Classes” tab to return to this page and continue shopping. Once you’ve added everything to your cart, and have double-checked it for accuracy, click on “Checkout with PayPal”.
  2. On the checkout page you’ll see that there is only one space in the contact information for your child’s name.  If you try to combine more than one child into this space it requires guesswork on our part to try to determine which child is taking which class, in addition to the extra work of separating them out when processing your registration.  So please create a separate order and pay separately for each child.
  3. Our organization depends on the volunteer efforts of all our members.  Those members not teaching or serving on the committee are expected to help out by volunteering to be hallway monitors or class helpers where needed.  We will be sending out a separate email explaining what these jobs entail and how to sign-up for a slot.

The last day to register is August 26.  Late registration is only possible at the discretion of the committee and with instructor approval. If you are unable to make an online payment, you can still register for classes, but this must be done by mail.  Send an email to: committee@mhcct.org and we will send you a registration form to fill out and mail in with your check.  Please be sure to allow enough time for us to receive your payment by the above deadline.  Absolutely no payments will be accepted later than August 26.  If the classes you would like to register for are full when we receive your registration form, we will return your check to you.

Fall 2011 – Schedule of Classes

Classes run for 60 mins unless otherwise noted. Expect the first and last 5 mins to be a transition time as children move from one class to another. If you wish to register your child for a class but they are not within the suggested age range, please either speak with the instructor or contact the committee (committee@mhcct.org).

If a class is full, you can click on the “waitlist” link for that class to register for the waitlist. We will notify you prior to the start of the session  if your child is able to get into the class, and refund your money if they are not.

Locations: Cheney Hall (177 Hartford Rd), Charter Oak Park (Charter Oak Rd), Oak Grove Nature Center (269 Oak Grove St). Charter Oak Park is a public park and is therefore available for outdoor play at all times, as are the trails at the Oak Grove Nature Center.
