Expectations

You and your children (over the age of 5) will be asked to sign this form on the first day of classes:

Expectations for our Monday Homeschool Classes Community

These are special guidelines written for our temporary locations: Cheney Hall, Charter Oak Park and the Oak Grove Nature Center.

In order to keep our community safe, strong and vibrant, we have the following expectations of our member families:

- Each family will support the community by volunteering in some capacity, as they are able.  Most of our classes are offered by parents and we encourage all parents interested in teaching a class to respond to our call for classes, which comes out prior to each session.  Additionally, this session we will need all parents remaining on-site at Cheney Hall to plan on being a Class Helper.

- Cheney Hall is a beautiful building built in 1866 and is a designated National Historic Landmark.  It is currently home to the Little Theater of Manchester (LTM). The building is a very acoustically live space, with the result that any loud sound will be very distracting to other teachers and students, and to the LTM staff working in the office. We expect parents to impress upon their children that we must be respectful of the building and staff at all times. This includes using quiet voices and always walking when inside in the building, especially in the hallways, stairwells and front lobby.  To help remind children of these expectations, we will need several parents to volunteer as Class Helpers. Class Helpers will primarily help maintain order by walking children from one class to another during transition times, or walking children outside to the Front Courtyard and waiting with them until their parent arrives. Children must be with a grown-up at all times, therefore, we expect to need several Class Helpers.  All parents remaining at Cheney Hall should plan to act as a Class Helper.

- MHC Campus: Cheney Hall is not well-suited for the youngest of our children, and there is no good location for children to hang-out in when not in class. There are several options available for parents of either young children, or children not taking a class. The Oak Grove Nature center has many acres of hiking trails, Charter Oak Park has a playground, greenway for walking or biking and fields for playing games, and the Mary Cheney branch of the Manchester Public Library has a nice children’s section. All of these facilities are located within 1.5 miles of Cheney Hall and we are considering them our MHC campus. Parents are welcome to take their children to any other location within our campus while their other children are in class. We do ask that all parents ensure their children’s teachers have a cell phone number for them, in case of emergency. We will also ask you to fill out an emergency contact card on the first day of classes, in case you cannot be reached.

Parents, Teachers and Class Helpers must work together to ensure that children are safe and appropriate while on the MHC Campus.  Specifically:

  • Walk and use quiet voices when inside buildings.
  • Only climb on items intended to be climbed on.
  • Do not jump down from things you have climbed onto.
  • When in the parking lot, children must remain at all times within arms distance of an adult.  This applies to all children not having yet attained their driver’s license.
  • There should be no violent physical contact.  Any adult in the vicinity is expected and encouraged to step in if it appears that a situation is verging on becoming physical.
  • Do not run with sticks or use them (or anything else) as a weapon.

Even though Charter Oak Park and the Mary Cheney Library are public spaces, we continue to expect all members of our group to maintain the same standards of behavior and respect for people and property. We understand that children remain in the process of learning and will forget at times, which is why we expect parents to support this learning by consistent reminders and modeling of appropriate expectations.

- Charter Oak Park is a public Town of Manchester recreational facility. We are planning to have lunch at this park (weather permitting) and are offering a Kickball class there as well. However, please remember that this park is a public facility. Within our group we can all still work cooperatively to keep our children safe and happy, but we may not be the only ones at the park. You should plan to wear your ‘playdate at the public park’ attitude instead of your ‘our group is alone on the back field of the Lutz’ attitude.

- In general, we expect both children and parents to listen to each other, treat each other with respect and resolve differences appropriately.  Ultimately, you are responsible for your own children, but we also expect and encourage parents to watch out for all children in our community.

We understand and agree to the expectations of the Monday Homeschool Classes community.
